Furnace replacement costs

Propane furnace installation cost: Installed Budget and Cost Factors

HomeGuide publishes $2,200-$5,700 for a standard propane furnace installed and $3,500-$7,400 for a high-efficiency one. Angi gives a wider fuel band of $3,700-$14,200. These scopes differ. Treat tank ownership, supply lines, conversion work and permits as separate questions. Use only unit and fuel setups approved by the maker. No gas-work steps are provided here.

Propane furnace installation cost needs a furnace scope and a propane supply scope. A furnace-only guide range does not necessarily cover a tank, delivery agreement or fuel conversion. Keep those boundaries written down before comparing the installed total with gas or electric heat.

Propane furnace installation cost: national sources

Source checked October 14, 2026 Published installed range Limit
HomeGuide propane guide $2,200-$5,700 standard; $3,500-$7,400 high efficiency Furnace installation; tank and new ducts need separate scope
Angi furnace guide $3,700-$14,200 Broad propane fuel range, not a controlled efficiency comparison
Home-specific written package Amount unknown until quoted Must name furnace, supply and required work

The furnace budget calculator uses these sources to populate propane allowances. Its typical point is derived from the range midpoints. It does not claim an observed median for equal-scope propane jobs.

Equipment and labor scope

Use a full model code and the maker's fuel record. Some unit families have an approved fuel-conversion path. That does not mean every gas model is by itself suitable for propane. The bid must name the supplied setup.

Record furnace input and output separately. A high-efficiency model and a standard model may have different input ratings for similar output. Holding rated input constant does not necessarily hold delivered heat constant.

Bid field Useful record
Furnace Full model, cabinet position and propane approval
Heat rating Input/output units and actual AFUE
Fuel configuration Manufacturer-approved supplied setup
Blower and controls Included type and required thermostat
Labor/materials Installation scope already within the bundle

Use ACCA Manual J for the heating load and Manual S for selection. A price guide's house-size example does not prove the required model at your home.

Tank ownership and fuel delivery

The tank can be owned by the homeowner or tied to a supplier arrangement. Those choices can affect install scope and future supply terms. A furnace bid is not a substitute for the actual tank agreement.

Ask who owns the tank, who maintains it and which duties follow from that ownership. Keep delivery terms separate from the furnace purchase. If a package includes a tank, name its stated scope rather than assuming all supply work is covered.

Propane supply question Record to retain Budget treatment
Existing tank retained Ownership and accepted condition/scope No assumed new-tank price
New tank included Full installation and agreement terms Count its actual amount once
Supply line work Defined route and installation responsibility Unknown until priced
Ongoing delivery Supplier terms and billed units Operating cost, not furnace installation
Old tank removed Removal and return duties Separate scope if not included

Do not infer a tank location, capacity or safe distance from this budget page. Those are site and unit questions. The source ranges do not approve a propane layout or gas connection.

Fuel conversion and manufacturer approval

Converting an existing furnace from one fuel to another is not the same as fitting a new furnace. Some bids may use approved conversion equipment. Others replace the unit entirely. Keep that distinction clear.

Ask the bidder to name the full model and approved fuel path. An unbranded conversion-kit price is not enough evidence for the job. A low cost for one kit does not cover every required control, vent or supply change.

If the conversion also retires an oil furnace, keep tank and line retirement in the budget. If it moves from electricity to combustion heat, venting is a new scope. No universal conversion surcharge is applied here.

The system choices guide compares the whole heating boundary. Use it to decide which bids to request. Do not compare a furnace-only change with a whole fuel conversion without aligning the included work.

Venting, condensate and permits

A propane combustion furnace needs the selected model's approved air and exhaust arrangement. DOE direct-vent guidance explains why sealed combustion air and exhaust paths matter. It does not approve the route at your house.

For a condensing model, ask for the drain and vent scope. Record any exposure to freezing and the install records used for the selected model. Do not treat condensate work as included unless the bid says so.

Work line What to check on the proposal
Venting Full model, route and included work
Condensate Required drainage scope for that model
Combustion air Stated arrangement and retained parts
Permit/inspection Actual duties and fees
Restoration Openings, patching and cleanup

Efficiency and operating-cost comparison

AFUE is the rated fuel-to-heat conversion over a season. It does not set the delivered propane price or the house's heat demand. Compare equal heat demand and clear fuel units if you want an operating-cost estimate.

Do not promise a fixed fuel saving from “high efficiency.” The premium model may have a different AFUE, blower or control package. The actual rating and use bases need to be explicit.

Keep delivery and fixed charges separate from fuel energy. A quoted gallon price can change with supplier terms and purchase period. A furnace install range cannot predict every later fuel bill.

Quote checklist for propane installation

State the furnace model and approved propane setup. Keep the output rating and load report together. Align the cabinet location, controls and duct scope before comparing prices.

Then name the tank and supply duties. Distinguish existing retained parts from new work. Record venting, condensate, removal and permits. Ask which quoted total includes each line.

Use the main calculator to mark open work unknown. If a tank or vent change has a separate price, add it once. Confirmed included work adds no second charge to a bundle.

Read the tank agreement beside the furnace quote

Write down who owns the tank. Then state who pays to put it in and who maintains it. Keep those duties on one sheet. A low furnace total does not answer them.

If the tank belongs to a supplier, read the actual supply terms. If it belongs to you, read the actual service terms. Do not assume both routes give the same future fuel price. Do not count a later fuel purchase as part of today's furnace install.

The old tank may also have return or removal duties. Put those in the conversion scope where needed. A new furnace does not settle an old tank agreement by itself.

Finally, check whether each cost is one-time or ongoing. That period is as useful as the amount. Keep the one-time job total and later fuel costs separate so you can compare the bids fairly.

FAQ

Does the furnace installation range include a propane tank?

The furnace ranges here do not prove tank inclusion. Read the actual bid and supplier agreement. A tank can be retained, purchased, leased or returned under different terms. Record its ownership and install duties. Add a tank amount only when it is a separately defined cost outside the stated furnace bundle.

Can any natural gas furnace be converted to propane?

Do not assume so. The full maker model record must approve the fuel setup and any conversion path. A general kit listing cannot establish that fit. This page gives no conversion instructions or gas settings. Keep the bidder's actual model and approved setup in the job record before comparing its price.

Why is Angi's propane range wider than HomeGuide's?

The guides use different broad job and unit scopes. HomeGuide separates standard and high-efficiency furnace install, while Angi's fuel table covers propane more generally. They are not equal controlled samples. Keep them named and separate, and use a written full-scope home-specific bid before treating a headline range as a total.

Is the fuel delivery agreement part of installation cost?

Some packages may link the two. But the agreement needs its own terms. Install cost and ongoing propane purchases have different periods and duties. Retain the tank ownership, delivery and maintenance record. Do not hide future fuel costs inside the furnace subtotal or assume the install quote fixes later delivery prices.

Verdict: define propane furnace installation cost and the supply agreement

For propane furnace installation cost, budget the furnace once and keep tank, fuel delivery and conversion scope explicit. Compare gas replacement costs only after aligning the job boundaries. Return to the main calculator for a sourced subtotal with an honest unknown list.
